Dr. Stephen D. Holmes graduated in Bachelor of Commerce & Business Administration in 1977 and Bachelor of Law, Juris Doctor in 1978 at the University of British Columbia. He was called to the Bar and appointed as Associate at Russel & DuMoulin in 1979 and subsequently operated his own firm for 34 years. Currently next to his position as of Counsel at Willems, Stephen is senior counsel with Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) a leading Canadian law firm where he assists the Tax and Family Wealth Counsel groups.
Stephen also lectured and written extensively in Europe, Asia and North America in regard to tax, estate planning, immigration and corporate governance. He was named offshore Trust lawyer and Cross-Border Estate Planning Lawyer for the year 2014 and was selected as one of the 50 Best Lawyers in Canada in 2011 for expertise in Tax Planning.
Next to his work as legal counsel he is Honorary Consul of Malta of the Provinces of British Columbia and the Yukon and Northwest Territories.
At Willems Stephen is active as of counsel on international trade and cross-border estate and tax planning matters, in which he advises clients on international- and Canadian law as well as business strategy.
